I realized two related things at work the next morning – Annie Gallon can put away a ton of whiskey and I don't have the head for it. I decided to stick to beer in the future.

I had just arrived at this profound discovery when my phone rang. I picked it up and a woman's voice said, “I'm issuing a subpoena to Winkleman's.”

I stared at my desk for a moment before I said, “Who is this?”

A chuckle from the other end. “This is Lindsey Cooper. To be honest, I didn’t think you’d be in this morning. I was going to leave a message.”

“Why’s that?”

“I heard you had your introductory dinner with Annie and her husband last night.”

“How would you hear that?”

“The women's bar association of Carrefour is a pretty small group. And that means I'm right?”

“You're right.”

“Very dedicated. I admire that.”

Carrefour is a small city but sometimes it’s much more like a small town. “So why are we talking about with Winkleman's Grocery Store & More?” I asked.

“The Zalinski case.”

“What does Winkleman’s have to do with Zalinski?”

“It turns out the traffic stop was on the street right in front of Winkleman's. I found out they have surveillance cameras in the parking lot. I asked for the footage but they said they need a subpoena. Just letting you know that I'm subpoenaing it.”

“Does it show anything?”

“I don't know. But I think that both of us would want to know before we go to trial.”

The only thing worse than bad evidence is bad evidence that’s a surprise so I agreed with her. “I'll join the request.”

“All right. I'll get things moving. And you’re really fine?”

“I’m really fine.”

“Okay. We’ll have to meet for lunch sometime at Barry’s. I hear they serve a mean greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray.”

“See now that's just rude.”

“Or, on Tuesday’s, they have an anchovy and banana pot pie with a green pea crust.”

“Bye, Lindsey.”

I hung up and resisted thoughts of Lindsey’s entrees. Eventually, I decided that I was going to make it. But I went and got a bagel anyway, just in case.
